2023 South Carolina Academy of Science, USC Center for Science Education ONLINE CONTEST Grades 4 - 8

Following is information, forms, and website for the 2023 ONLINE contest for the Middle/Elementary School Academy of Science (MESAS) sponsored by The Center for Science Education (CSE) at USC & South Carolina Academy of Science (SCAS), produced by faculty and staff at Universities & Colleges in South Carolina and members of SCAS.

This contest challenges students with fun math and science questions. All schools that have a grade 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 can participate. 

The online contest must be completed on or before Monday, March 6, 2023.

There are two online contests: 

• E contest for grades 4 – 6
• M Contest for grades 6 – 8.

(A sixth grader can enter E or M but not both.)

We encourage students to use reference resources of all types, including the internet. However, we strongly discourage parent’s assistance in finding the answers. This is a competitive contest meant to teach the children new methods of learning and exploring. We love the parent’s involvement, but require the students find the answers on their own for this contest.

Each school that participates will have at least one winner, and each student that enters the contest will be recognized with a participation certificate given by their sponsoring school.

After the contest deadline, we will select winners in the four categories: School, Region, State, and Grand and produce Honors Certificates for each student winner. We will mail the Honors Certificates to the principal of the school to provide to the winning student's parent.

There will be lots of winners, not just one or two. We recognized at least one winner at each school and sometimes at each grade level. A template for Participation Certificates is available. Sponsors can use the template to create a participation certificate for their students.

We have four levels of winners: School, Region, State, and Grand Winners.

After the contest is completed (after Monday, March 6, 2023) we will pick our winners in the four categories above and produce Honors Certificates for each student winner. We will mail the Honors Certificates to the principal of the school to present.

Winners will be announced on the Center for Science Education website & SCAS website. In addition, results will be published in the South Carolina Academy of Science Newsletter in the May/June/July issue.

Note: We do not need payment in advance. Send it in when you can—we are non-profit.
