The National Merit Scholarship Program

The National Merit Scholarship Program

It is an academic competition among high school students for recognition and college scholarships.

The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for entry. The PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 will not be considered for entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program. The competition spans 18 months from entry (testing). The College Board, which administers the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests, coordinates with the program to determine qualifying scores. They then contact you for your student to begin the next round of qualifying requirements.

The PSAT/NMSQT is arranged through the local high school, or private school. The test is given only in October of each year. Start contacting schools at least 4 months prior to secure testing registration. The test is open to students in 7th-12th grade. This information is specific for those students entering their 3rd year of high school.

Note: The linked booklet is the information for the Fall 2022 (October 2022 testing) to enter the 2024 program (college entry). However, the booklet covers how the program is administered, how students qualify, and test taking pointers for students.
